Manchester United are interested in Napoli star Dries Mertens and the club’s representatives met the Belgian recently, in order to discuss a possible summer move, according to Il Mattino. The Naples-based paper claims the representatives of the United met the 29-year-old in a hotel in the city centre.

The former PSV man has been playing in a more central role for Napoli, in the absence of forward Arkaduisk Milik, in this season. However, Mertens is yet to reach an agreement over a potential contract extensions and reports suggest the player is open to a move away from San Paolo.

Mertens’ change in position has helped him a lot this season with the Belgium international having amassed 23 goals and 11 assists in 34 appearances in all competitions for Napoli so far. He is said to have rejected a contract extension from Napoli and his current deal expires in 2018. A potential contract extension would mean a € 2.4 million-a-year salary which is twice what he earns now.
