Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres, dearly known as El Niño by his supporters, has agreed to extend his contract with the Spanish giant. According to reports from El Partidazo de Cope, the striker has agreed the terms and conditions for his new contract with the club. 

According to the reports, the 33 year old Spaniard has met the conditions required for him to add a one year extension to his existing contract, Since Torres has met these conditions, Atletico Madrid have presented Torres with an option to extend his contract, which would keep him at the club until the summer of 2018. The decision know lies with Torres and his representatives to accept or reject the option. 

Torres recently missed two matches due to a head injury in Atletico Madrid's clash with Deportiva La Coruna. He had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher and sufferred head trauma. He was missing from the squad in Atletico's matches against Valencia C.F. and Granada C.F., but made a return againt Sevilla. He made a substitute appearance as Atletico won the fixture by 3-1.  

The ex-Liverpool and ex-Chelsea player has scored 7 goals this season across all competitions, and assisted on three occassions. He has made 31 appearances so far, despite having competition from in-form players like Kevin Gameiro. 

Atletico Madrid are set to move into their brand new stadium this summer, the Wanda Metropolitano. The new stadium has a capacity of around 67000 spectators. The increased match-day income from the new stadium will provide Atletico Madrid a boost and help them bridge the gap between themselves and giants Barcelona and Real Madrid. It will also be important for them to hold on to their key players. While Atletico have slightly fallen off tracks this season in the La Liga, the next season will provide incentive for Torres to stay at the club.
